Windshield and Comprehensive Claims: How They Work and When to File

By June 4, 2026July 30th, 2026No Comments

A rock chips your windshield on 501. A hailstorm in a parking lot dents your hood and roof. A deer runs out in front of you on Highway 9. You pull out your phone and start thinking about whether to file a claim — and you realize you are not entirely sure how comprehensive coverage works or whether filing is the right call.

These are some of the most common claim scenarios we field questions about, and the answers are more nuanced than most people expect. Here is a clear breakdown of how comprehensive coverage and windshield claims work in South Carolina.

What Comprehensive Coverage Actually Covers

Comprehensive coverage — sometimes called “other than collision” — is the portion of your auto policy that covers damage to your vehicle from causes other than a collision with another vehicle or object. The list of covered perils under a standard comprehensive policy includes:

  • Windshield and auto glass damage from rocks, road debris, or objects

  • Hail damage

  • Animal strikes — hitting a deer, a dog, a bird flying into your windshield

  • Theft or attempted theft

  • Vandalism

  • Fire

  • Flooding or water damage

  • Falling objects — tree limbs, etc.

  • Civil disturbance damage

Collision coverage — a separate part of your policy — covers damage from hitting another vehicle or object, running off the road, or a rollover. The distinction matters for both claim filing and deductible application.

How Windshield Claims Work in South Carolina

South Carolina is not a zero-deductible glass state, unlike Florida. In South Carolina, your comprehensive deductible applies to windshield and auto glass claims unless your policy includes a specific glass endorsement that reduces or eliminates the deductible for glass damage.

This means: if your comprehensive deductible is $500 and a rock chip turns into a crack requiring full windshield replacement at $350, filing a claim does not make financial sense. You would pay the full replacement cost out of pocket because the loss is below your deductible. If the same windshield costs $650 to replace, you would recover $150 from the claim after your $500 deductible — and that $150 claim payment goes on your CLUE report for five to seven years.

Many South Carolina drivers are surprised to learn their windshield claim is subject to their deductible. If you are not sure whether your policy includes a glass endorsement that modifies this, call your agent before you schedule the replacement.

Chip repair vs. full replacement

A chip or small crack that can be repaired — rather than requiring full windshield replacement — is treated differently by many carriers. Some policies and some carriers cover chip repair at no deductible because early repair prevents a more expensive full replacement later. This is worth asking about specifically if you have a repairable chip. Safelite and most auto glass companies will work directly with your carrier on the repair, and many repairs can be completed in under an hour at your location.

How Hail Claims Work

Hail is a comprehensive claim, and in a significant hail event that causes meaningful damage across your vehicle, filing is almost always appropriate. On the South Carolina coast, hail events are less frequent than in the Midwest, but they do occur — particularly during severe thunderstorm season. The decision framework is similar to other claims: is the estimated damage significantly above your deductible?

One nuance specific to hail: if you are in a parking lot during a hail event and multiple vehicles are damaged, your claim is one of many the carrier is processing from the same event. These multi-car weather events are generally treated favorably from a surcharge standpoint because the damage is clearly weather-related and not indicative of any driver behavior.

How Animal Strike Claims Work

Hitting a deer or other animal is a comprehensive claim — not a collision claim, as many people assume. This distinction matters because your comprehensive and collision deductibles may be different, and the claim type can affect how it is classified in your claim history.

Animal strikes are also treated favorably by most carriers from a surcharge standpoint because the driver bears no fault for the event. A single deer strike is unlikely to affect your renewal premium significantly at most carriers. However, multiple claims in a short window — even multiple deer strikes — can still flag your policy for review.

Does Filing a Comprehensive Claim Raise Your Rate?

Generally, comprehensive claims are treated more leniently than collision claims when it comes to surcharges, because they involve no driver behavior or fault. A single windshield claim or a single deer strike at most carriers does not result in a rate surcharge. However:

  • Multiple comprehensive claims in a short period can still affect your renewal, even if none of them involved fault

  • Some carriers treat comprehensive claims more aggressively than others — this varies significantly by carrier

  • Even a non-surcharged claim appears in your CLUE report and is visible to future carriers, which can affect your options when shopping

  • If you are already on thin ice with your carrier due to a prior claim, even a minor comprehensive claim can affect the renewal decision

The Practical Decision Framework

Before filing any auto claim — comprehensive or otherwise — run through these questions:

  • Is the estimated damage meaningfully above my deductible? If not, pay out of pocket.

  • What is my current claim history? A clean record tolerates a claim better than one that already has recent activity.

  • Is this damage repairable at lower cost without a claim? A $200 chip repair versus a $700 windshield replacement is worth getting quotes on before filing.

  • Does my policy have a glass endorsement that reduces or eliminates my deductible for glass damage?

When in doubt, call your agent before calling the glass company. We can tell you your deductible, whether a glass endorsement applies, and help you think through the claim-or-pay-out-of-pocket decision in about two minutes. That call costs nothing and can save you from a claim that should not have been filed.
